One of the biggest parts of our job as Auckland electricians is working with clients to create the perfect lighting schemes for their homes. Despite common misconceptions, the process is quite enjoyable! It’s all about creating the ideal lighting environment to live in that complements all of your other design choices.
In this blog post, we’re going to walk you through Good Electrical’s lighting design and installation process. We discuss what we do from beginning to end, starting from the moment we meet the clients and the role our clients play in creating the perfect lighting scheme. If you’re considering revamping your lighting or customising lighting fixtures in your new home, read on!
Stage One: Ideas
We believe in working alongside our clients to realise their vision. After all, supplementing your ideas with our expertise is a far better approach than charging ahead on our own.
Stage one of the lighting design process involves sitting down with clients and talking through design ideas. Clients tell us what they want, and we advise them as to whether it would work for their home and what fixtures may be suitable.
If our clients find themselves stuck for ideas, we’re happy to make suggestions and provide examples of previous work, as this can be a good springboard for their own unique design. If you’re considering engaging us for your lighting, don’t be afraid to get creative! We love designing unique and awe-inspiring fixtures and have the experience to integrate our expertise with client desires, so don’t hold back!
Stage Two: Planning
Where stage one is the creative stage, this one is more practical. Using the plans of your home, while keeping the client’s wants and needs in mind, we work to create a full mark-up of the lighting layout. This includes the lighting fixture types, positions, and quantities, as well as any supplemental technology such as motion sensors or dimmers.
Something many people don’t know about planning their lighting design is that they’re going to need to make decisions on whether a specific area requires “task” or “mood” lighting.
Task lighting is meant for illumination in a particular room to accomplish a specific activity; think home study or kitchen. Dim, inconsistent or poor lighting can be frustrating when you’re doing focus-intensive tasks.
On the other hand, mood lighting is designed to create a particular atmosphere—such as a relaxing lounge—or to highlight certain parts of a room.
LED Mood Lighting
One of the things you may not know about custom lighting is that you can do just about anything with LED strip lighting! It’s a great option if you want to create mood and drama in a certain space. These can be installed under wall hung vanities to make them look like they are floating. You can also recess the strip into the ceiling to create different shapes. Finally, we can connect them to sensors so they automatically come on during the night so people can see their way to the bathroom.
For dramatic mood lighting, ask us about our LED lighting installation services during a design consultation.
Stage Three: Finalisation
As we get closer to the fitting stage, we finalise the lighting plans. This helps prevent any miscommunication or confusion about the final product. After going away and drawing up the electrical plans with our team, we always come back to the client and walk them through the lighting plan. This allows clients to make any final tweaks or veto anything they discover they no longer want.
Essentially, we want to make sure that everyone is on the same page before we begin wiring, as it is much harder to take out a circuit and replace lighting fixtures than it is to erase and draw a new line on the plans.
Stage Four: Implementation
Finally, we implement the lighting design. We provide our client with a working timeframe and get to it as soon as possible.
The implementation stage begins with prewiring, where we wire each of the circuits that power the lights behind the walls or fixtures. Once that’s complete, we bring in the actual fixtures and execute the fit off. Lastly, we check each fixture to make sure that everything is working correctly.
We believe in getting the job done right no matter what, so you can be assured we’ll be leaving you with the perfect installation.
